We’ve got 3 money saving solutions to help you plan your projects and avoid minor mistakes that lead to major, yet avoidable expenses.
1. Project Your Timeline.
Printing from your home or office only takes a few moments. Your design is complete and you’re all set to go. You send the job to the desktop printer or copier and you’re done.
Not so fast in the land of commercial printing, things aren’t that quick. Especially with offset printing; there are no single print buttons to push to get the job done. Once your project is received, several things take place from proofing, scanning, and processing. The press is prepared for printing. Images are transferred to the printing plates as each of the primary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) has a separate plate. The ink is distributed to the plates through a series of rollers. On the press, the plates are made damp by water rollers and then by ink rollers. The water rollers keep the ink off of the non-image areas while each plate transfers its image to a rubber blanket that in turn transfers the image to paper to produce your project. The plate itself doesn’t actually touch the paper, thus the term “offset”. Then we let it dry. Exciting, huh?
With all of that being said, you will need some pre-printing planning time in order to achieve your maximum results on time. Every job is unique. Of course, business cards take less time to produce than catalogs. It basically depends on the complexities of your project. We recommend that you discuss your project with your print professional to determine an estimated turnaround time and plan your in-hands date with a few days of “wiggle” room. Keep in mind that the miracle of RUSH printing may be “doable,” but it also comes at a higher cost.
2. Project Your Quantity.
So, you only need a thousand of those new catalogs, you say?
Forecast your need for the project at hand. Will you use the media for a special event? Mailing? Marketing to potential clientele or mass distribution?
Keep in mind, as stated in #1, that print is a production process and most of the time and effort in offset printing is setting up and getting ready to print. Once the press is actually in operation, the difference between 1,000 and 5,000 quantities is much less than it is starting over. It would be a tremendous cost saver for you to start with the larger amount the first time vs. submitting a new project order the next time.
3. Proofread! Proofread! Proofread!
More than one person should proofread.
It’s a good practice to have multiple people to proofread your project. This will save you the most on printing cost. There is nothing more aggravating than to have an amazing looking project with one single, or even multiple errors. Such minor faux pas can send your marketing project straight to the trash and your marketing dollars down the drain. Proofreading is of the utmost importance when it comes to print. Our brains are trained to comprehend for content without recognizing the errors. Sometimes you can read something a hundred times and miss the most obvious mistakes.
Make it a practice to ask someone else to look over what you are printing, read the text, check the design, and get opinions. Remember, your project is a reflection on your business or event. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a good impression. Unlike web postings, what is printed stays printed! What seems like a small correction can mean starting the whole production process again with all the costs involved. Proofread – early and do it often!
